Counselling for children & young people

  • This is a safe, confidential place for children and young people aged 4-18 to explore difficult feelings or events to make them feel smaller or see them in a new way. We only talk about things that you want to talk about. We find new ways to manage your feelings.

    • If finding words is difficult we may use art, craft, play, sand, lego, games or maybe stories to think about painful or confusing problems.

    • I change how I work according to your age, ability and interests. Therapy for young children is likely to be through the medium of play.

    Length of therapy

Fees for children & young people

The therapy is usually weekly in my comfortable therapy rooms in Holywood, or online for young people. It can last for 6 sessions or a few months.  The focus and length of the therapy will be agreed by us when we meet.

Experience of working with children & young people

I have worked for many years with children and young people aged 4-18 in school, charity and community settings.

    • I work with issues such as family/school/friend relationship changes or difficulties, bereavement/loss, and health challenges. These issues may have led to heightened worries and difficulty regulating anxiety or  anger, or low mood / self-esteem, and sleep issues.
    • I work systemically, so when appropriate or agreed, I work in partnership with parents/carers, teachers and social/health workers. It is a safe way to support children and young people, with appropriate consent that doesn’t compromise the confidentiality of our sessions. The child’s wishes remain at the heart of what we do.

    Children

All work with children is face to face only. I meet with parents/carers for an initial assessment for up to 45 minutes at a cost of £30. We can answer each other's questions and decide if we want to offer your child the opportunity to meet me.

Finding a counsellor who your child feels happy to be with is important, so the initial session with your child is free. It is their chance to understand what counselling is, ask questions and decide if they want to go ahead. Ultimately it will always be their decision to go ahead or not. Regular weekly sessions of 50 minutes are £45 thereafter.

    Young people

Finding a counsellor who you feel confident and happy to be talk with is important so our initial meeting (up to 30 mins online or in person) is free. We can talk about the difficulties in your life and some possible aims for counselling. You might want to ask questions.

If we make a plan to work together the regular weekly sessions of 50 minutes are £45 thereafter.

    Counselling for adults

You can choose to meet me for counselling sessions face to face in Holywood or online. Both modes give you a safe and confidential spacee where we can reflect on difficult feelings or events in your life.

We talk about what you want to talk about, at a pace set by you. I offer a nurturing and restorative place for you to build strength, understanding of relationships and events, and find better ways to manage and make changes.

I have worked with adults in community, agency and charity settings, focussing on family, work and relationship issues, bereavement/loss and difficult life events.

    Length of therapy

    • The therapy will usually be weekly and can last for 6 sessions or a number of months. Short therapy usually focuses on recent or current challenges, longer therapy is likely if you are troubled by past difficulties.

    • We will agree on the focus of the therapy and its length when we meet at the start and review at regular intervals.
